What does it mean that AIFF is lossless?

That the decoded audio is bit-for-bit what went in. Nothing is thrown away on the assumption you will not hear it, so an AIFF can be re-encoded, edited and re-saved indefinitely without accumulating the artefacts that stack up in lossy formats. The price is size — several times a compressed equivalent — which is why lossless is the right choice for masters and the wrong one for a phone full of music. AIFF is the studio interchange format on macOS, handles metadata better than plain WAV, and imports into Logic and Pro Tools instantly.
Why do professional tools hand back AIFF?

The format keeps quality and structure through repeated opens, edits and re-saves, which is what a production pipeline needs and what a delivery format explicitly trades away. Do the artist, album and cover art on my AIFF survive conversion?

Is AIFF being phased out?

The practical position is that keeping an archive in this format is fine, while starting a new workflow in it means accepting an increasingly narrow set of software.
Can an AIFF file carry a 5.1 surround mix?

Yes — the format handles more than two channels properly, so a surround mix keeps its channel layout rather than being folded to stereo on the way in. Whether you hear it as surround depends on the far end: a receiver will decode all the channels, a phone will downmix at playback time regardless. Converting to a stereo-only format makes that fold permanent.
Does it matter that AIFF is over thirty years old?

Age itself is not the problem — several formats from that era are still perfectly good, precisely because everything has had decades to implement them. What matters is what the era assumed: small files, modest processors, no network, and features nobody needed yet. Where those assumptions still fit, the format is fine. Where they do not, that is the reason to convert. AIFF is Apple’s Audio Interchange File Format from 1988, built on the same IFF chunk design as AVI’s RIFF.
Why will an AIFF file not play in my browser?

Browsers decode a short, fixed list of audio formats and AIFF is outside it, so the file downloads instead of playing or the player simply reports an error. Desktop software with a wider codec set opens it without trouble. If the audio has to play on a web page, converting it is the fix — no player configuration will add a decoder the browser does not ship. AIFF is as large as WAV with worse support outside the Apple world, so it is a poor choice for distribution.
Do I need a Mac to work with AIFF files?

No. The format came out of Apple and is what its devices and software produce by default, but the files themselves are ordinary and read fine elsewhere with the right tool. Converting here happens on the server, so no QuickTime install, no Apple hardware and no platform-specific codec pack is involved anywhere in the process.
Does converting change the sample rate of my AIFF audio?

Not unless you ask it to. A conversion keeps the source rate — 48 kHz stays 48 kHz, 44.1 kHz stays 44.1 kHz — because resampling is a small quality cost for no benefit when nothing requires it. The exceptions are real: audio CDs need 44.1 kHz, some older hardware players accept nothing else, and voice pipelines often want 16 kHz. Set the rate explicitly in those cases and leave it alone otherwise.
Can I just rename the extension instead of converting AIFF?

Almost never, and it is worth understanding why: the extension is a label, while the bytes inside are structured for one specific format. Renaming produces a file whose name promises something its contents do not deliver, and whatever opens it either refuses the file or misreads it. The one narrow exception is two formats that are genuinely the same container under different names — and even then a proper rewrap is safer than a rename.
Can I convert a whole folder of AIFF files in one go?
